South Dakota Supreme Court - The South Dakota Supreme Court is the highest court in the state of South Dakota. It is composed of a chief justice and four associate justices appointed by the governor. One justice is selected from each of five geographic appointment districts.
State and local agencies are required to make public records available for inspection by the public.
• South Dakota public notices - Perform refined searches of notices made available to the public through newspapers of record.
• South Dakota Court Records - South Dakota has a statewide record search program. CRIMINAL cases are available, unless sealed, on the UJS system from 1989 to present. CIVIL cases, unless confidential or sealed, are available from 2003 to present. Active money judgments are available for the past 20 years and inactive money judgments from April 19, 2004 to present.
• South Dakota Health & Vital Records - Search online for vital records.
How the South Dakota Court Works - The court system is like a pyramid. At the bottom of the pyramid are the Magistrate Courts, where misdemeanor criminal cases and small claims court cases are heard. Next in the pyramid are the trial courts called Circuit Courts. The highest court in the state is the South Dakota Supreme Court. If someone loses a case in the circuit court, they can appeal to the South Dakota Supreme Court.
